What to look after a Hair Transplant

Hair Transplant is a very important decision for all of you who decide to go ahead with it.  However, it is also a procedure preferred by an increasing amount of people. Particularly, FUE Hair Transplant is the most popular minimally invasive and painless procedure without side effects.

However, getting the right information about what to expect after the hair transplant by an expert surgeon beforehand is extremely important. How will your scalp look like after the hair transplant? How long should you wait until you see the final hair density? What will be the post op after care?

FUE Hair Transplant: the procedure

FUE Hair Transplant is considered to be the latest surgical method, as it provides exceptional restoration results within the shortest recovery time. Contrary to the conventional FUT hair transplant (also known as the Strip method) which is painful and leaves a permanent linear scar in the donor area, the FUE Hair Transplant is scar free because individual hair follicles are extracted one by one from the donor area using very small surgical tools.

At IQ-Intensive Quality Hair Clinic, FUE Hair Transplant is carried out using local anesthetic. Depending on your hair density, the harvested hair follicles are placed in the recipient area at the right depth and angle and blended in with the original hair for a complete natural result.

After the procedure, the surgeon puts a bandage on the donor area, while also providing after care instructions to minimize the risk of possible discomfort and ensure a successful outcome. Recovery time may last a week. Having said that, let’s now see, what the days after a FUE Hair Transplant will look like.

The first days after FUE Hair Transplant

The follicular units’ extraction and implantation from one area of the scalp to another may lead to temporary discomfort, which however reduces as the days go by and the grafts start to grow.

In the majority of cases, usually absence from work or daily activities is not required. However, the surgeon often recommends a 2-3 days rest after the hair transplant procedure as well avoiding strenuous activities. Furthermore, depending on the season the hair transplant is performed, the surgeon may suggest the use of a hat during the first weeks. In addition, the surgeon will recommend that during sleep, the head should rest on a pillow, as well as will give proper instructions for hair washing.

In the scalp area where the grafts are placed, a slight redness, some sensitivity, itching or swelling may occur which all, however, are temporary and will last for a few days, and painkiller and antibiotics are used to treat or reduce these symptoms, always prescribed by your doctor.

Two weeks after the Hair Transplant, the new grafts will start falling out. Do not panic! This is a natural process of the new hair growth cycle. Here how it goes: Hair grows in the follicular unit which contains 2 to 4 hairs. When this particular follicular unit is transferred, the natural shedding of the old hair is expected and is part of the natural growth cycle. Most people see 60% of their new transplanted hair to grow after 6 to 9 months.

The first months after a FUE Hair Transplant

There is a dormant period of 2-3 months between the FUE hair transplant and new hair growth. Not all hair grows at the same rate. Approximately, 20% of hair grows between the second and the fourth month, whereas 60-70% between the fifth and the eighth month.

As hair grows one centimeter per month, the first visible result is obvious at least around 4 and 5 months after the FUE Hair Transplant, whilst final hair growth will be achieved after a period of 12 months. As soon as the new hair starts to grow, they will look natural, without showing any signs of a previously performed hair transplant. New hair can be worn, cut and combed without any problem or restrictions.

PRP combined with FUE Hair Transplant for the optimum result

At IQ-Intensive Quality Hair Clinic, to optimise FUE Hair Transplant result, we apply the advanced and absolutely natural Autologous Mesotherapy of Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) after the procedure. Platelet rich Plasma from the patient’s own blood is injected locally on the recipient and donor area. Due to its healing and regenerating properties, new hair growth is accelerated and the existing hair is strengthened. PRP treatment can be applied throughout all FUE hair transplants stages. When applied before the hair transplant it minimizes hair shedding and stimulates the tissue prior to implantation. During the hair transplant, PRP is used to preserve the hair follicles until they are implanted into the recipient area, as it also improves their viability and their ability to regrow.

The IQ “Guarantee per follicle”

At IQ-Intensive Quality Hair Clinic, we provide a guarantee for the number of follicular units transplanted in the recipient area. The trichoscopy controlled method before the hair transplant and 12 months after it, allows to count the actual grafts growth. In case it is found that some follicular units did not re-grow, (excluding a deviation of less than 5%), we will perform a supplementary FUE with no extra cost.
